Why have the protests of early June 2020 - in Philly, in America, around the world - looked so familiar in many ways? And why have certain images - of the Frank Rizzo statue, of a primary amidst a pandemic & protests, of protestors in masks referencing #MeToo, of police tear gassing protestors - stuck? This 4 week class, taught by City Church member and professor of history Laurie Wood, will explore some of the history behind the deep rituals and rhetorics that we have watched and lived as Philadelphians. And, using the Christian idea of “liturgy”, we’ll discuss how our own practices and words might contribute to justice and healing in our city. This will be a safe space to bring questions about the deep histories of race, injustice, inequality, (and related topics) in Philly and the U.S.
