LIGHTING THE ADVENT WREATH: The First Candle

SCRIPTURE: Habakkuk 2:1-4

I will stand at my watchpost, and station myself on the rampart; I will keep watch to see what he will say to me, and what he will answer concerning my complaint. Then the Lord answered me and said: Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so that a runner may read it. For there is still a vision for the appointed time; it speaks of the end, and does not lie. If it seems to tarry, wait for it; it will surely come, it will not delay. Look at the proud! Their spirit is not right in them, but the righteous live by their faith.

LESSON

Do you ever feel like life’s not fair? Like people get rewarded for being mean? And good people are teased or bullied? You’re not the only one. Habakkuk felt that way, too. Habakkuk was a prophet who decided that he had had enough. So he marched up to a tall tower and told God he was mad. Then he waited for God to answer. And God did answer. God showed him a vision of what would happen: God promised to shake the earth and punish the people who are doing evil and rescue the people who love him. Then God told Habakkuk to write that vision on a big billboard so that people zipping past could see it. Just like Habakkuk, we can help other people see the good things that God will do.

THINK OR TALK ABOUT

When was a time that you told God that you were mad or frustrated?

PRAYER

Good God,
when I’m frustrated,
remind me that you will make things right.
Amen.
