A Invitation to Lent

March 5 - April 19, 2025

A season dedicated to repentance and renewal should not lead us to despair; it should cause us to praise God for his grace. Central to Lent is the idea that we need this kind of renewal consistently throughout our lives. We do not receive God’s grace only when we turn to him at the beginning of our spiritual journey. God’s grace meets us again and again.

The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and continues for forty days (not including Sundays) leading up to Easter. Historically, Lent has been a time where Christians around the world focus on repentance, humility, and preparation, renewing practices of prayer, fasting, and generosity. Instead of fasting for a meal, some people “give up” a food group (i.e. meat) or a habit (i.e. checking social media).

If you are new to observing the season of Lent, this article may be helpful to you. Paul Burkhart, our Youth Director, wrote up this helpful overview, and this page gives a nice way to talk about Lent with children. If you want to create a Lent calendar for you or your children to decorate each day as you pray, consider this resource.

Our deacons also lead us each Lent in taking up an Easter Sacrificial Offering to support local and global mission partners. The recipients of this year’s offering will be announced on Ash Wednesday.

May God bless us this Lent as we journey together in the Way of Jesus.
